Watch: Crip Camp: A Disability Revolution on Netflix

In the early 1970s, teenagers with disabilities faced a future shaped by isolation, discrimination and institutionalization. Camp Jened, a ramshackle camp "for the handicapped" in the Catskills, exploded those confines. Jened was their freewheeling Utopia, a place with summertime sports, smoking and makeout sessions awaiting everyone, and campers who felt fulfilled as human beings. Their bonds endured as they migrated West to Berkeley, California - a promised land for a growing and diverse disability community - where friends from Camp Jened realized that disruption and unity might secure life-changing accessibility for millions. Co-directed by Emmy®-winning filmmaker Nicole Newnham and film mixer and former camper Jim LeBrecht, this joyous and exuberant documentary arrives the same year as the 30th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, at a time when the country's largest minority group still battles daily for the freedom to exist.

CRIP CAMP: A DISABILITY REVOLUTION is executive produced by President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama, Tonia Davis and Priya Swaminathan, Howard Gertler and Ray Lifchez, Jonathan Logan and Patty Quillin, LeBrecht, and Newnham. Starring: Larry Allison, Dennis Billups, Judith Heumann.

A princess with two futures. A destiny all her own.

When a mysterious and terrifying sorceress robs Alyrra of both her identity and her role as princess, Alyrra seizes the opportunity to start a new life for herself as a goose girl.

But Alyrra soon finds that Kestrin is not what she expected. The more Alyrra learns of this new kingdom, the pain and suffering its people endure, as well as the danger facing Kestrin from the sorceress herself, the more she knows she can’t remain the goose girl forever.

With the fate of the kingdom at stake, Alyrra is caught between two worlds and ultimately must decide who she is, and what she stands for.

Watch: Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam C.J. Walker (2020)

An African American washerwoman rises from poverty to build a beauty empire and become the first female self-made millionaire. Based on a true story.

Starring: Octavia Spencer, Tiffany Haddish, Carmen Ejogo

Read: Super Adjacent by Crystal Cestari

Claire has always wanted to work with superheroes, from collecting Warrior Nation cards as a kid to drafting "What to Say to a Hero" speeches in her diary. Now that she's landed a coveted internship with the Chicago branch of Warrior Nation, Claire is ready to prove she belongs, super or not. But complicating plans is the newest WarNat hero, Girl Power (aka Joy), who happens to be egotistical and self-important . . . and pretty adorable.

Bridgette, meanwhile, wants out of WarNat. After years of dating the famous Vaporizer (aka Matt), she's sick of playing second, or third, or five-hundredth fiddle to all the people-in-peril in the city of Chicago. Of course, once Bridgette meets Claire-who's clearly in need of a mentor and wingman-giving up WarNat becomes slightly more complicated. It becomes a lot more complicated when Joy, Matt, and the rest of the heroes go missing, leaving only Claire and Bridgette to save the day.

In this fresh and funny take on the world of supers, author Crystal Cestari spotlights what it's like to be the seemingly non-super half of a dynamic duo with banter-filled romance and bold rescues perfect for readers seeking a great escape.

Queer superheroes? Yes, please!

Read: Wicked As You Wish by Rin Chupeco

Many years ago, the magical Kingdom of Avalon was left desolate and encased in ice when the evil Snow Queen waged war on the powerful country. Its former citizens are now refugees in a world mostly devoid of magic. Which is why the crown prince and his protectors are stuck in…Arizona. Prince Alexei, the sole survivor of the Avalon royal family, is in hiding in a town so boring, magic doesn’t even work there. Few know his secret identity, but his friend Tala is one of them. Tala doesn’t mind—she has secrets of her own. Namely, that she’s a spellbreaker, someone who negates magic. Then hope for their abandoned homeland reignites when a famous creature of legend, and Avalon’s most powerful weapon, the Firebird, appears for the first time in decades. Alex and Tala unite with a ragtag group of new friends to journey back to Avalon for a showdown that will change the world as they know it.

Highlights

☾ My grandma came back home from Philippines!

☾ The blessing of having a rare 5 days off of work in a row (that I requested lol). Although it'll hurt my paycheck come next pay period, I needed it to rest and spend time with the family now that my grandma is home.

☾ Amazing publishers reached out with some awesome diverse and #ownvoices e-galleys that I've been excited for and some I haven't heard before but sounds incredible.

☾ Mail-in ballots for the primary elections came in this month!

☾ Payday landing on Valentine's Day. Makes coming in to work that day worth it.

☾ Did a little early spring cleaning and decluttering, and sold some things I had but never used/wore. Might as well pass it along to someone who'll use them and make a little commission off of it.

☾ Scheduled tax appointment. Okay, it's not exactly exciting but it was a feat to finally get in touch with my tax person to finally set up an appointment and not stress about it anymore.

☾ Finding new bar shampoo + conditioner that comes in recyclable packaging to try.

☾ A coworker whom we call "Tia" fed us a whole feast at work on a Sunday shift with nachos, homemade cheese and salsa. Plus, Mexican cookies for a sweet treat.

☾ Volunteering with local orgs/movements to textbank, mail postcards and canvass for Elizabeth Warren, and seeing old mentors from poli-sci courses we took and from volunteering with ACLU of NorCal in 2018. It was so good to see them and volunteer with them again.

☾ My debit card was declined while I was buying some cold medicines and soap for my parents after work one night, and I was $5 short in cash then a kind man behind me covered the difference for me in a random act of kindness. So grateful that there are still some kind humans out there.

Lowlights

  • Missing out on the Love N Queen Mary author signing event in Long Beach, CA this month. I will have to make their next event Love N Vegas in Vegas this coming October. Someone hold me up to this!
  • Pre-booking/planning flights and accommodation for YALLwest next month is looking expensive and stressing me out. I don't want to book anything yet until after I do my taxes and know that I can afford the trip after paying taxes. Fingers crossed it pans well.
  • Someone in New York had charged my debit card somehow, so I had to file a fraud claim and my bank blocked my card for a week until they issued me a new debit card. Not having $ to get gas for work or a few essential items until I got my card was HARD. It was definitely an exercise to go for so long without funds. I couldn't even get cash from the ATM because my card no longer worked. Lesson/pro tip: always keep some cash handy in case of these situations or emergencies.
  • Family got sick and I managed to avoid contracting the cold for a week until I finally caught it. Luckily with the help of zicam, emergen-c, electrolyte water, ginger + turmeric soup and honey tea, it only lasted for two days.
  • Even though my grandma came back from Philippines, we've only had her back for a week before my auntie stole her away from us for two weeks. The little siblings were especially bummed about this.
