Young Adult Fantasy
December 27, 2016 from HMH Books for Young Readers

Seventeen year-old Britta Flannery is at ease only in the woods with her dagger and bow. She spends her days tracking criminals alongside her father, the legendary bounty hunter for the King of Malam—that is, until her father is murdered. Now outcast and alone and having no rights to her father’s land or inheritance, she seeks refuge where she feels most safe: the Ever Woods. When Britta is caught poaching by the royal guard, instead of facing the noose she is offered a deal: her freedom in exchange for her father’s killer.

However, it’s not so simple.

The alleged killer is none other than Cohen McKay, her father’s former apprentice. The only friend she’s ever known. The boy she once loved who broke her heart. She must go on a dangerous quest in a world of warring kingdoms, mad kings, and dark magic to find the real killer. But Britta wields more power than she knows. And soon she will learn what has always made her different will make her a daunting and dangerous force.

erinErin Summerill was born in England. After spending years bouncing between Air Force bases in Hawaii, England, and California, her family settled in Utah, where Erin graduated with a B.A. in English from Brigham Young University. She had aspirations to write the next great American novel, but writing proved tougher than she first thought. So she grabbed a Nikon and became a professional photographer while crafting manuscript after manuscript. The scenic detour of shooting weddings across the United States, as well as internationally, provided world-building inspiration. It gave her the vision to draft her debut YA fantasy, EVER THE HUNTED. Now when she isn’t writing, or shooting a wedding, she’s chasing her four kids, two dogs, one cat, and five chickens. This could be why she downs massive amounts of Coke Zero and Hot tamales.

{Story Diary} Girls in the Moon by Janet McNally

girls in the moonGirls In the Moon by Janet McNally
Young Adult Contemporary
November 29, 2016 from Harper Teen

An exquisitely told, authentic YA debut about family secrets, the shadow of fame, and finding your own way.

Everyone in Phoebe Ferris’s life tells a different version of the truth. Her mother, Meg, ex–rock star and professional question evader, shares only the end of the story—the post-fame calm that Phoebe’s always known. Her sister, Luna, indie-rock darling of Brooklyn, preaches a stormy truth of her own making, selectively ignoring the facts she doesn’t like. And her father, Kieran, the cofounder of Meg’s beloved band, hasn’t said anything at all since he stopped calling three years ago.

But Phoebe, a budding poet in search of an identity to call her own, is tired of half-truths and vague explanations. When she visits Luna in New York, she’s determined to find out how she fits in to this family of storytellers, and to maybe even continue her own tale—the one with the musician boy she’s been secretly writing for months. Told in alternating chapters, Phoebe’s first adventure flows as the story of Meg and Kieran’s romance ebbs, leaving behind only a time-worn, precious pearl of truth about her family’s past—and leaving Phoebe to take a leap into her own unknown future.

He's talking fast, and sounds nervous. "I'm sure your dad made actual cassette-tape mixes for your mom. I sort of wish I could do that. But I figured something out." He hands me a white iPod shuffle. I take it and it feels so small, so light, that if my mom and dad time-traveled here from 1994, I'm sure they wouldn't believe there are songs in there.
"Okay," I say. He hands me a piece of paper then, lined and torn from a notebook. In blue ink and perfect, tiny printing, he's written out all the songs and artists.
"I had to write everything down because it's a shuffle, and um, things are going to come up in random order, so it's not perfect." He takes a breath. "It's no cassette tape, that's for sure. Sometimes I think we're missing out on a lot."

A little bit about me: I've wanted to be a writer since I was tiny, and I've always read everything in sight. I earned an MFA in fiction from the University of Notre Dame, where I never attended a football game (sorry) but had fantastic professors and classmates. I've twice been a fellow in fiction with the New York Foundation for the Arts (in 2008 and currently, in 2015), and my stories and poems have appeared in publications including Gettysburg Review, Boulevard, Mid-American Review, Ecotone, Crazyhorse and Best New Poets 2012 .

In 2014 my book of poems Some Girls was chosen by Ellen Bass as winner of the White Pine Press Poetry Prize, and the book was published in August 2015. My young adult novel Girls in the Moon is forthcoming from HarperTeen (HarperCollins) in the fall of 2016. (Yes, I seem to have a thing for using the word "girl" in titles. What can I say? Girls are great). Girls in the Moon will also be translated into German, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish.

I live in Buffalo, New York, with my husband and three little girls, and I teach creative writing at Canisius College.

Nothing says Happy Birthday like summoning the spirits of your dead relatives.

Alex is a bruja, the most powerful witch in a generation...and she hates magic. At her Deathday celebration, Alex performs a spell to rid herself of her power. But it backfires. Her whole family vanishes into thin air, leaving her alone with Nova, a brujo boy she can't trust. A boy whose intentions are as dark as the strange marks on his skin.

The only way to get her family back is to travel with Nova to Los Lagos, a land in-between, as dark as Limbo and as strange as Wonderland...

"Los Lagos is a place of power. You have power, whether you want it or not. The land calls out to us."

--Zoraida Cordova, Labyrinth Lost (ARC pg. 104)

Deathday: a magical coming of age, like a bat mitzvah or a sweet sixteen, but for brujas and brujos [of Zoraida's own creation]. It is a time when a family of brujas/brujos gets together and wakes the dead spirits of their ancestors. The ancestors then give their blessing to the bruja/brujo. In the glossary that can be found in the back of the book, Zoraida says that aspects of Deathday are inspired by the Day of the Dead (Mexican holiday) and Santeria (Afro-Caribbean religion).

Death mask: white clay that covers the face, which the matriarch of the family paints on the bruja or brujo receiving their Deathday. Then a black paint or charcoal powder is used for the eyes, nose, and lips. The death mask is influenced by the sugar skulls of the Day of the Dead. In real life, sugar skulls are used to represent the dead and decorate the feasts of Dia de los Muertos.

the Deos: the pantheon gods worshipped by brujas and brujos. It represents all aspects of nature, creation, and everyday life, similar to the orishas of Santeria and the gods of Greek mythology. Brujas and brujos often choose a Deo the way catholics choose a patron saint to pray to. Even though the Deos rarely present themselves to mortals, they make their presence known. It is believed that the Deos act through the mortals they created--the brujas and brujos.

**Info from above are from the glossary, which can be found in the back of the book. Zoraida informs that these are creations of her own for the purpose of Labyrinth Lost**

Young Adult Magical Realism, LGBTQIA+

When the Moon Was Ours follows two characters through a story that has multicultural elements and magical realism, but also has central LGBT themes—a transgender boy, the best friend he’s falling in love with, and both of them deciding how they want to define themselves.

To everyone who knows them, best friends Miel and Sam are as strange as they are inseparable. Roses grow out of Miel’s wrist, and rumors say that she spilled out of a water tower when she was five. Sam is known for the moons he paints and hangs in the trees, and for how little anyone knows about his life before he and his mother moved to town.

But as odd as everyone considers Miel and Sam, even they stay away from the Bonner girls, four beautiful sisters rumored to be witches. Now they want the roses that grow from Miel’s skin, convinced that their scent can make anyone fall in love. And they’re willing to use every secret Miel has fought to protect to make sure she gives them up.

It has been presented in many Middle Eastern and sub-continental cultures; Muslim, Sufi, Hindu, and secular. Layla and Qays, are in love from childhood but are not allowed to unite. Qays (called Majnun, which means “possessed”) is perceived to be mad in his obsession with Layla. Layla is married off to another and Majnun becomes a hermit, devoting himself to writing verses about his profound love of Layla. Although they attempt to meet, they die without ever realizing a relationship. [source - and more info]

{raditorial} consumnes river preserve | galt, ca

Sep 19, 2016

yesterday we set off to adventure a nature preserve that's 20 miles away from us, and found ourselves here. consumnes river preserve, located in galt, ca is a 46,000 acre nature preserve. the preserve is home to over 200 bird species, over 400 plants, as well as cranes, pintails, hawks, stilts and turkeys. we unfortunately didn't get to see much of the animals besides turkeys during our treck, but we did enjoy the walk through the serene nature the walk provides.

the preserve offers fairly easy nature trails, where sometimes you won't even spot another human being if you go during off-peak months. the pristine trail offers beautiful sights of the lush varieties of plants and occasional wildlife, that leads to a man made wooden walkway that ends with a deck, which is an amazing spot to watch the sunset for the perfect (insta)gram.

other than hiking, you can also go paddling in the river, go fishing, driving tours, nature watch and more. they also offer guided tours and school field trips.
they do restorations to preserve the nature and wildlife, and they allow anyone who's interested to volunteer. to learn more, visit their website here.

Falling in love with him won’t be my story.

Daniel: I’ve always been the good son, the good student, living up to my parents’ high expectations. Never the poet. Or the dreamer. But when I see her, I forget about all that. Something about Natasha makes me think that fate has something much more extraordinary in store—for both of us.

The Universe: Every moment in our lives has brought us to this single moment. A million futures lie before us. Which one will come true?

{Story Diary} The Graces by Laure Eve

Aug 31, 2016

Happy book birthday to my birthday twin, The Graces by Laure Eve! While it doesn't release in the US until Sept. 6, I wanted to celebrate The Graces today, on the UK's release day! For obvious reasons, of course. ;) What I liked about The Graces was how author Laure Eve makes readers question what is real and what is not; what is true and what's not; and if there are such things as magic or coincidences. Nothing is as it seems. You might as well as leave your theories at the door because someone's going to pull the rug right out from under you. That was what drew me in and made it onto my favorite shelf. I hope that this book has the similar effect on readers, because it is splendid and magical...but not in the way you might expect.

TheGraces(Revised)The Graces by Laure Eve
Young Adult Contemporary, Fabulism
September 6, 2016 from Amulet Books

In The Graces, the first rule of witchcraft states that if you want something badly enough, you can get it . . . no matter who has to pay.

Everyone loves the Graces. Fenrin, Thalia, and Summer Grace are captivating, wealthy, and glamorous. They’ve managed to cast a spell over not just their high school but also their entire town—and they’re rumored to have powerful connections all over the world. If you’re not in love with one of them, you want to be them. Especially River: the loner, new girl at school. She’s different from her peers, who both revere and fear the Grace family. She wants to be a Grace more than anything. And what the Graces don’t know is that River’s presence in town is no accident.

This fabulously addictive fantasy combines sophisticated and haunting prose with a gut-punching twist that readers will be dying to discuss. Perfect for fans of We Were Liars as well as nostalgic classics like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and the 1996 movie The Craft, The Graces marks the beginning of a new wave of teen witches.

"We all hide our true selves."

--Laure Eve, The Graces (eARC Loc 645)

There was a story about the Graces, a story so woven into the fabric of the town. The Graces are the three Grace siblings: Summer Grace, and the twins, Thalia and Fenrin. The Grace family are rumored to be witches, which makes the siblings the popular and most envied and feared in school. They had friends, but then they didn't. They changed friends like some people changed hairstyles. Everyone wanted to be with them, or be a Grace. They were one step removed from the rest of the school, minor celebrities with mystery wrapped around them like fur soles, an ethereal air to their presence that whispered tantalizingly of magic. The twins' birthday is August 1st; it was the town's own Friday the 13th. It was believed that being a Grace was like being in a cult.

The question I dread most when meeting new people is “Where are you from?” For some reason, possibly to do with being an idiot, I can’t just give one answer. Because it’s a bit complicated. Where are you from – you mean where do I live? Where did I used to live? Out of all the places I’ve lived, which one do I most identify with and thus would feel comfortable about choosing to answer your question? Where am I from ‘genetically’? Where was I born?

‘Idiot’, you’re thinking right now. It’s cool.

I’m both French and British (none of this ‘half’ stuff – I don’t have a half citizenship or half a passport); and I live and work in London. I was born in Paris, but grew up in Cornwall. Sometimes I feel very French. Other times exceedingly British with biscuits on top. Often the proud Cornish part of me rears its affable head. I strongly suspect the British part of me has more than a hint of Scottish. Ah, the Old Alliance, as the Boy is fond of saying.

This is both complicated and pretty damn enjoyable.

I work in publishing [career 1], in an area that crosses over substantially with the kind of fiction I write [career 2]. I try hard to keep them separate. I don’t talk about my writing when I have my publishing hat on, and vice versa. It’s basically like I have a secret identity. Yes of course that makes me cool, why do you ask?

{Story Diary} The Lovely Reckless by Kami Garcia

Aug 15, 2016

tlrThe Lovely Reckless by Kami Garcia
Young Adult Contemporary
October 4, 2016 from Macmillan

I’ve become an expert at avoiding things that could hurt me—which means I will figure out how to stay away from Marco Leone.

Seventeen-year-old Frankie Devereux would do anything to forget the past. Haunted by the memory of her boyfriend’s death, she lives her life by one dangerous rule: Nothing matters. At least, that’s what Frankie tells herself after a reckless mistake forces her to leave her privileged life in the Heights to move in with her dad—an undercover cop. She transfers to a public high school in the Downs, where fistfights don’t faze anyone and illegal street racing is more popular than football.

Marco Leone is the fastest street racer in the Downs. Tough, sexy, and hypnotic, he makes it impossible for Frankie to ignore him—and how he makes her feel. But the risks Marco takes for his family could have devastating consequences for them both. When Frankie discovers his secret, she has to make a choice. Will she let the pain of the past determine her future? Or will she risk what little she has left to follow her heart?

"I know how it feels to carry a story inside you--one you want to share with someone, but you can't find the words."

--Kami Garcia, The Lovely Reckless (eARC Loc 2546)

  • "You know it when you feel it. But it's easy to miss the bite point when the car is on a slope and you're worried about sliding backward and crashing. Because that's what happens if you try to shift into first gear when the clutch isn't engaged." --Kami Garcia, The Lovely Reckless (eARC Loc 1565)

  • "When the clutch engages, the pedal exerts pressure on your foot, the same way fear exerts pressure on our minds before we do something risky--like run a race, bungee jump, or ask someone on a date. The pressure isn't really a push back. It's a nudge forward." --Kami Garcia, The Lovely Reckless (eARC Loc 1575)

  • "The tachometer will let you know when it's time to shift into the next gear." --Kami Garcia, The Lovely Reckless (eARC Loc 2015)
