We're counting down the days until the release of Isla and the Happily Ever After by Stephanie Perkins with a read-a-long celebration event! While I've just finished reading Isla and the Happily Ever After three days ago, I have not read Anna and the French Kiss or Lola and the Boy Next Door until nearly two weeks ago for the very first time. Even then, when I heard that there's a read-a-long of all three, I jumped at the chance to join in on the fun on Twitter, and decided to take matters into my own blog as well.

Today, I've got some tastey French treats in store, plus photos of the City of Love, and a photo diary of my Paris trip from 2006. The #IslaIsComing read-a-long is hosted by Andi's ABCs, Cuddlebuggery (who made that lovely banner above), The Perpetual Page-Turner, Paperiot, and A Bookish Sinister Kid.

"The buildings in my arrondissemont blend one into another, curving around corners with sumptuousness of wedding cakes [. . .] sidewalks , they're lined with identical benches, and ornate lampposts, bushy trees ringed in metal grates, Gothic Cathedrals and tiny creperies, postcard racks and curlicue wrought balconies."

"The entrance is through a grand archway, set back in a courtyard with manicured trees. Geraniums and ivy trail down from window boxes on each floor, and majestic lion heads are carved into the center of the dark green doors [. . .] On either side of the doors hangs a red, white, and blue flag -- one American, the other French."

My Paris Photo Diary

While visiting my cousins across the pond in England and Scotland, I went to visit the romantic city myself back in 2006 for post-eighth grade/summer vacation, and reading Anna and the French Kiss made me feel nostalgic for Paris. So I dug up a few pictures from that trip and wanted to include it here. I went to more places than what I'm going to post below, but here's a few of the pictures that I can locate right now. (Fun fact: it cost 11 Euros ($15 US) to ride the elevator to the top of the Eiffel Tower (at the time). I was also afraid of that elevator ride, but had a blast going down the stairs to the bottom.)

About Stephanie Perkins

Well, hello! I'm Stephanie Perkins, and I write novels for teens (and for adults who aren't afraid to admit that teen books are awesome). I was born in South Carolina, raised in Arizona, attended universities in San Francisco and Atlanta, and now I live in the mountains of Asheville, North Carolina. My best friend is my husband Jarrod. Our house is almost a hundred years old, and every room is painted a different color of the rainbow. We share it with a cat named Mr. Tumnus. I've always worked with books—first as a bookseller, then as a librarian, and now as a novelist. On weekdays, you'll find me at my desk, typing away, downing cups of coffee and tea. On the weekend, you'll find me at the movies, waiting for the actors to kiss. I believe all novels and films should have more kissing.

Opposition

Aug 4, 2014

Happy release day! This is the moment we've all been waiting for -- the release of the final installment in the Lux series. I may be doing this ass-backwards, but I wanted to create a story diary for Opposition to commemorate the epic finale. Don't worry, I won't post spoilers and I will create diaries for the other books eventually (which is why the species are not listed here). But for now, I will celebrate said epic finale by starting with an Opposition story diary first.

Science Fiction, Paranormal Romance, Young Adult

Katy knows the world changed the night the Luxen came.

She can't believe Daemon welcomed his race or stood by as his kind threatened to obliterate every last human and hybrid on Earth. But the lines between good and bad have blurred, and love has become an emotion that could destroy her—could destroy them all.

Daemon will do anything to save those he loves, even if it means betrayal.

They must team with an unlikely enemy if there is any chance of surviving the invasion. But when it quickly becomes impossible to tell friend from foe, and the world is crumbling around them, they may lose everything— even what they cherish most—to ensure the survival of their friends…and mankind.

War has come to Earth. And no matter the outcome, the future will never be the same for those left standing.

Mini Review

Spoiler-free

Okay, so I lied. This won't really be a review per se, but just some thoughts on the book. Origin left us with quite a cliffhanger in which we are still dealing with the repercussions that happened in that book. Although it's bittersweet that this is the end, we've been waiting to see how it all ends and where everyone stands and who makes it out alive and together.

Shit, meet fan. They’ve met a couple times in this one. Long story short, I was almost convinced that it was possible for me to hate Daemon (my #2 book boyfriend) at one point, but he wasn’t exactly to blame for what made me ache for both Daemon and Katy. But then when we’re in Daemon’s POV, we see that there’s more than what Katy sees. Daemon really put A LOT on the line and sacrificed a lot too in Origin that continues into Opposition. It showed how soul-deep his feelings for Katy is. He’d do anything, risk anything just to keep his Kitten safe. So if you think you hated the Arum, the DOD or Daedalus before, think again and prepare to exceed that limit. The things that they face in here was a lot bigger than what we’ve ever known.

The world as we know had been struck and left with ugly reminders of the cause that laid in its wake. The alien invasion, the Origins conspiring, shocking truths, an alliance with a familiar (if you’ve read Obsession) Arum, sketchy characters and plans… you’re left questioning every motive and who’s on whose side. And then there’s that thing with Dee. And what about Katy? What is she, if not your typical hybrid? So many things that we didn’t understand before, comes into light here.

Luc. What to say about him. I didn’t like him at first. He was a punk ass kid when we first met him. It was that way for a long time, I never thought that would ever change. Now, I wouldn’t go as far as to say that I like him at the end, but he’s the type that you hate to hate less. I was glad to see Hunter from Jennifer’s companion novel Obsession. He has an important and probably surprising role in all of this. But Archer is my favorite (if I had to pick one) because he just keeps on getting more hilarious every time, annoyingly so.

It’s been a long journey of a lot of battles, hardships, conspiring, obstacles, losses, fighting, deaths, hurting, but also strength-building, life lessons, forgiveness, family, gains, love and a whole lot of sarcasm and inappropriate innuendos from none other than Daemon himself.

I flew through this faster than I would have liked, but I honestly could not put it down. After such trying times for the gang, it’s sadly over and ended wonderfully. Suffice to say that I read to the last line with a big ass grin on my face. Armentrout has a knack for the most comical lines and situations for which I can identify with and appreciate.
