{Story Diary} White Hot Kiss by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Jul 27, 2015

This is it, you guys. The conclusion to the Dark Element trilogy is finally here. Happy release day, Every Last Breath! Who are you rooting for Layla to pick? (I'm team Layla...and kind of Roth...and Zayn too...eh, I'll just stick to team Layla). Let's take it back to the first book, White Hot Kiss with a story diary to celebrate, shall we?

White Hot Kiss by Jennifer L. Armentrout
Paranormal Romance, Young Adult
February 25, 2014 from Harlequin Teen

One kiss could be the last.

Seventeen-year-old Layla just wants to be normal. But with a kiss that kills anything with a soul, she's anything but normal. Half demon, half gargoyle, Layla has abilities no one else possesses.

Raised among the Wardens—a race of gargoyles tasked with hunting demons and keeping humanity safe—Layla tries to fit in, but that means hiding her own dark side from those she loves the most. Especially Zayne, the swoon-worthy, incredibly gorgeous and completely off-limits Warden she's crushed on since forever.

Then she meets Roth—a tattooed, sinfully hot demon who claims to know all her secrets. Layla knows she should stay away, but she's not sure she wants to—especially when that whole no-kissing thing isn't an issue, considering Roth has no soul.

But when Layla discovers she's the reason for the violent demon uprising, trusting Roth could not only ruin her chances with Zayne…it could brand her a traitor to her family. Worse yet, it could become a one-way ticket to the end of the world.

Zombies

"Patchy skin like brown worms. Areas of it's face were missing flesh. A strip on the cheek flapped against the purplish lips, and what remained hung from the bones, heavily creased and resembling dried-out beef jerky."

-- Jennifer L. Armentrout, White Hot Kiss

It's not a JLA book if Supernatural isn't mentioned, am I right or am I right? ;)

Some songs popped in my head while reading that quite fits somewhere in this story. And one song in particular was mentioned in the book.

Find You by Zedd reminds me of Roth and Layla. There's this scene where Roth tells Layla something about losing himself when he found her...yeah, it seemed fitting.

Paradise City is Roth's anthem. You can find him whistling the tune throughout the book, so it has become his anthem.

Layla and Roth's banter cracked me up. Here's a little taste of their dynamic. (Note: not all of the quotes below are of Layla and Roth, just most.).

"I stared at him, wishing Hell would swallow him up and welcome him back with open arms."

-- Jennifer L. Armentrout, White Hot Kiss

LOL, Layla. (Same).

"You're such a fountain of random knowledge. Where do you keep it all?"
"In my brain. You have one too, I think."

-- Jennifer L. Armentrout, White Hot Kiss

Gotta love secondary character banter.

"Crack is whack."
"I can't believe you just said that."

-- Jennifer L. Armentrout, White Hot Kiss

Hold the phone. Roth just said crack is whack. LOL. (And I just said hold the phone. Don't mind me. Carry on).

"You know what they say about first kiss."
"You regret them?"
"No, I was going to go with 'you never forget them.'"

-- Jennifer L. Armentrout, White Hot Kiss

Nice one, Layla. What a way to kill a what could have been a romantic moment. I like it! High-five.

"I'm okay. I can fight."
"I sure hope so because if you're just going to lay there and bleed, you suck."

-- Jennifer L. Armentrout, White Hot Kiss

You tell her, Roth!

"Your life isn't about what you can't do. It's about what you can do."

-- Jennifer L. Armentrout, White Hot Kiss

Amen.

and last, but definitely not least...
